CHFD225 Week 2 Discussion - Stressors that Impact Diverse Populations

Please review the US Citizenship test questions in the video using the link below. After viewing, please share with us your experience. What was your reaction to the questions? Were you prepared for the level of difficulty of the questions? Was it stressful?  Were you surprised by anything?

U.S. Citizenship Naturalization Test

In a separate paragraph, pretend an undocumented individual took the test.  What are some possible stressors that he/she might encounter (if one struggled in answering the questions), and possible benefits that are afforded (if one did do well in answering the questions).  In the actual Naturalization test, you would be given just 10 of the 100 questions and be expected to answer 6 correctly in addition to a writing and reading portion of the test.

CHFD225 Week 5 Discussion If I had known then what I know now

This week you read about intimacy, love, dating, and marriage. Think back over your teen years. Who taught you about intimacy, relationships, and sexual health? What was your dating life like? Did you want to get married one day? If so, what did you imagine it would be like? If you are married now, is marriage what you expected? Why or why not? What qualities are important in a mate? In your experience, what makes a healthy relationship? Is intimacy the same as sex? If you could go back, is there anything you'd do differently?

As you think about those questions, write a letter to you as a teen, giving relationship advice. Your letter should address at least 4 of the questions above as well as any other topics you'd like to include. You may share your experiences as well as material from our readings and any other scholarly sources you find helpful.

CHFD225 Week 7 Discussion Divorce, Remarriage, Cohabitation, and Staying Single

Throughout the course we've examined some of the challenges diverse families face. Sometimes the challenges break the family down and divorce is the end result. After a divorce, some people choose to stay single, some get married again, while others decide to just live together. For this discussion please compile a pros and cons list for divorce, remarriage, cohabitation, and choosing to be single. Be sure to cover factors such as the effects on the children, income, emotional well-being, etc.

CHFD225 Week 8 Discussion Family Policy

Please read, chapter 26 in "Contemporary Issues in Family Studies: Global Perspectives on Partnerships, Parenting and Support in a Changing World" in our readings to complete the discussion this week.

While most people can identify the issues affecting American families, not many people understand what goes into the development of family policy, let alone agree on what the role of government should be regarding families. Based on your experience and what you learned this week, what are the principles that should guide the development of family policy? Please share your "take away" from the reading this week. For example, did you learn anything new or did anything surprise you? Feel free to use outside scholarly sources to complete this discussion as well.

CHFD307 Week 1 Discussion Introductions and Research Question

This discussion contains 2 parts.  Please include your response to both parts in the same post.

Part 1:  Introduce yourself to your classmates. Who are you, are you married or engaged, children, pets, etc…,where are you stationed/residing, what are your interests outside of your academic life , why did you decide to take this course and what do you hope to gain from it before the semester is over.

Part 2:  Identify a question about child or adolescent development that you would like to see researched and answered. How/why would knowing the answer to your question be important?

CHFD307 Week 4 Discussion Cognitive Development

There are several theorists and theories such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and the newer Information Processing Theory (as well as others) that look at how we think, develop and grow cognitively. Which theory most closely resembles your way of thinking about how children grow and develop cognitively? Why did you pick this over others? Can you provide an example where you used this theory application in your professional life?

CHFD307 Week 5 Discussion Improving School Achievement

Getting parents involved in school is always a challenge. In elementary schools there is far more involvement than in middle and it drops off again in high school. Sadly, there are often more teachers in the cheering stands for some sports or activities than parents. Why do educators want parents involved? What does the research say?  Share a favorite parent involvement activity.

CHFD307 Week 7 Discussion Diagnosing Young Children

As you have learned this week, diagnosing psychiatric disorders in children has mental health professionals evaluating many factors. Most of this is defined within the DSM5. Yet there can be problems and a misdiagnosis can occur. What effect might misdiagnosis have on children lives?

In addition, some questions of mental wellness may be related to aspects of empathy, sympathy, and morality. How is empathy developed in young children? Why do some have this quality and it seems absent in others? Should we "teach" morality? If so, how is that accomplished? What is the role of parents in developing these very important qualities?

You may be tempted to use personal narrative which is fine to a point. BUT, since this is college you must support your ideas with factual content (reference).

Remember that emotions may run strong about this "hot" issue, so please be sure to use your netiquette!
