Week 1 Discussion Introductions and Research Question
This discussion contains 2
parts. Please include your response to both parts in the same post.
Part 1: Introduce yourself to your
classmates. Who are you, are you married or engaged, children, pets, etc…,where
are you stationed/residing, what are your interests outside of your academic
life , why did you decide to take this course and what do you hope to gain from
it before the semester is over.
Part 2: Identify a question about
child or adolescent development that you would like to see researched and
answered. How/why would knowing the answer to your question be important?
CHFD307 Week 4 Discussion Cognitive Development
There
are several theorists and theories such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and the newer
Information Processing Theory (as well as others) that look at how we
think, develop and grow cognitively. Which theory most closely resembles
your way of thinking about how children grow and develop cognitively? Why did
you pick this over others? Can you provide an example where you used this
theory application in your professional life?
CHFD307 Week 5 Discussion Improving School Achievement
Getting
parents involved in school is always a challenge. In elementary schools there
is far more involvement than in middle and it drops off again in high school.
Sadly, there are often more teachers in the cheering stands for some sports or
activities than parents. Why do educators want parents involved? What does
the research say? Share a favorite parent involvement activity.
CHFD307 Week 7 Discussion Diagnosing Young Children
As
you have learned this week, diagnosing psychiatric disorders in children has
mental health professionals evaluating many factors. Most of this is defined
within the DSM5. Yet there can be problems and a misdiagnosis can occur. What
effect might misdiagnosis have on children lives?
In
addition, some questions of mental wellness may be related to aspects of
empathy, sympathy, and morality. How is empathy developed in young children?
Why do some have this quality and it seems absent in others? Should we "teach"
morality? If so, how is that accomplished? What is the role of parents in
developing these very important qualities?
You
may be tempted to use personal narrative which is fine to a point. BUT, since
this is college you must support your ideas with factual content (reference).
Remember
that emotions may run strong about this "hot" issue, so please be
sure to use your netiquette!
