Week 1 Discussion What is family
Directions: This week's
discussion has multiple parts. Please be sure to include all parts in the
same post.
Part 1: Tell us a little about
yourself. Where are you from/live now? Where do you work? What are your
hobbies/interests outside of school? What do you want to do once you
graduate?
Your first post in this
discussion must be 250 words. It must be made in the first week of class. It is
used to confirm your entry into the course. If you do not write a 250 word
first post in this discussion within a week, you will be dropped from the
course.
Part 2: The concept of
"family" has changed drastically over the years. How do you define
the term "family"? (Be sure to list the key elements necessary for a
social group to be defined as a "family.") How does your definition
differ from what's described in your readings?
Part 3: Last but not least, what was
your "take away" from the readings this week? For example, did
anything surprise you? Was there something you disagreed with? What theory or
concept made the most sense to you and why?
CHFD340 Week 2 Discusssion Family Conflict and Gender
BEFORE you complete the reading
this week take a few minutes to think about your communication style and how
you handle conflict. Make a list of your strengths and areas that need improvement
and keep the list close by as you read the readings and work on the discussion
questions.
Once you've completed the reading, watch this video.
Now, think about your list, what you read this week, and what you
learned from the video.
·
What is the Bowen Family Systems
Theory and how can it be used to address the issues surrounding family
stress and conflict? Be sure to use an example related to the video to clarify
your position.
·
Based on what you learned and read this week,
as well as your own experience, please discuss how do gender and culture affect
family functioning and communication?
·
How do the "agents of
socialization" help family members learn to function in their social
world and socializes them as it relates to gender.
Make sure to support your answers with facts from the lesson
material.
CHFD340 Week 4 Discussion Attraction and Relationships
write
down the first 5 things that come to mind when you think of being
attracted to someone.
Darwin
believed that men and women picked mates based on certain attraction cues that
ensure the successful reproduction of the human species. Based on what you've
learned and your dating experiences, please answer the following questions: Is
there anything from your list that corresponds with Darwin's
Evolutionary theory? Please share your results. Did anything surprise you?
This
week you read about the different stages and types of relationships (dating,
hooking up, cohabitating, and marriage). Wrap up this week by sharing your
thoughts on the future of "relationships"? For example, do you think people
will continue to search for their soulmate or will marriage become a thing of
the past? Is technology making it easier or more difficult for people to
maintain healthy relationships? What theory made the most sense to you and why?
(Those are just some ideas to get you started. Please feel free to answer those
questions and/or share your own take-away.)
Make
sure you provide factual information from the lesson to support your answers.

Week 6 Discussion Parenting Styles
Parenting styles have changed over the years. Think back to your
childhood.
- What style of parenting did your parents
use?
- Was it effective? Why or why not?
Are you a parent? If so, do you use the same parenting style your
parents did or did you come up with your own? Please explain.
If you aren't a parent, please tell us your expectations of parenting.
Do you think you'll use the same style of parenting your parents used,
something from the your readings, or a combination? Please explain.
Make sure you provide factual information from the lesson to support
your answers.
CHFD340 Week 8 Discussion Family Stress
To wrap up our class, pick two of the following
issues (or you may choose other issues that we have discussed throughout this
semester), and based on what you've learned, summarize the impact those issues
have on children and what can be done to minimize the damage.
- Domestic Violence
- Death of a Parent
- Death of a Child
- Addiction
- Taking care of Elderly Parents
- Adoption
- Teen Pregnancy
- Adultery
Make sure you support your answers with facts
from the lesson material.
Please also share a few "take-away"
elements of the course that added to your understanding of Family
Development. (Be thorough, thoughtful, and specific in your post.)Think
about what stood out to you during the semester.
